Shooting Bigfoot: Hot Docs Adds A New Sentence

There seems to be a renewed debate going on because someone at Hot Docs added a sentence to the end of their synopsis of 'Shooting Bigfoot'. FB/FB posted this to their page yesterday:

This is what the original Hot Docs overview had to say about the documentary:

“I don’t think an hour goes by in the day where I don’t think about Sasquatch,” divulges one aficionado. So begins Morgan Matthews’ rollicking foray into the obsessive, hoax-filled cult of Sasquatch. Using the in-the-trenches style of The Blair Witch Project, the film allows us to accompany the adventures of three Sasquatch search parties: socially awkward “master tracker” Ric Dyer; crotchety old guys Dallas and Wayne; and Tom Biscotti, perhaps the most devoted of the bunch, who has hunted Sasquatch unabatedly for 37 years. The teams tramp through the wooded unknown with tracking equipment and ample conviction in hand, the bipedal ape-like creature they seek seemingly just around every bend. As truth and fact tip into malarkey, nighttime hunts devolve into farcical displays of voodoo and comic stretches of the human imagination. A humorous look at perception gone off the rails, Shooting Bigfoot is a no-holds-barred plummet into folkloric lunacy. Justin Mah

Now we have a revised edition on the Hot Docs website.

“I don’t think an hour goes by in the day where I don’t think about Sasquatch,” divulges one aficionado. So begins Morgan Matthews’ rollicking foray into the obsessive, hoax-filled cult of Sasquatch. Using the in-the-trenches style of The Blair Witch Project, the film allows us to accompany the adventures of three Sasquatch search parties: renowned “master tracker” Rick Dyer; old friends Dallas and Wayne; and Tom Biscardi, perhaps the most devoted of the bunch, who has hunted Sasquatch unabatedly for 37 years. What starts as a humorous look at perception gone off the rails, descends into a dark mystery as things get out of control during a close encounter in the woods."

I noticed they dropped "no-holds-barred plummet into folkloric lunacy". I can only wonder why the folks at Hot Docs would alter their original overview. Maybe Matthews read it and asked for changes, who knows. The fact of the matter is this rewrite doesn't give us any more, or any less information about the documentary.
There is also some chatter going on about 'Shooting Bigfoot' being listed in the Science Fiction category. One person says there is no such category listed for the Film Festival. That much is true, but the documentary is being co-presented by Toronto After Dark, which is a  "Horror, Sci-Fi, Action & Cult Film Festival"
It's easy to see how some people got the two festivals or categories mixed up. Regardless of that, 'Shooting Bigfoot' is still being showcased in the Night Vision category, and that lines up with the co-presenters. All you need to do is visit Toronto After Dark's website to see they are genre specific.
Here is what T.A.D had to say on their Facebook page:

Hot Docs even uses the words "Cult Classics" on this page.

"Toronto, March 19, 2013 – Hot Docs is pleased to announce Nightvision will highlight future cult classics and showcase diverse creative approaches to filmmaking. Nightvision will turn the spotlight on the famous and infamous alike, including a group of idealists with a naked approach to helping the environment, rapping best friends Silibil n’ Brains, and creative force James Franco. It will give audiences a behind-the-scenes look at The National’s international tour, owners memorializing their pets, fanatic Bigfoot hunters, and a drug-fueled expedition in the Gabonese jungle. Each film in this program will have a late-night screening at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema."

Hot Docs also lists the films by interest on this page. I had a look on their page and I could only find the documentary listed in two of the categories.

So really nothing has changed. Keep in mind there are three other people in this documentary. Some people forget that fact.
I am kind of curious why there is no trailer for 'Shooting Bigfoot' though.

    2. There is a bigfoot body and I cant wait!!

  2. How could it be that cut and dried absolute proof(footage AND a body)would be "a dark mystery"? There would be no mystery about it. At least they spelled Biscardi right on the re-write.

  3. My observation is these folks most likely have not seen the film and are only projecting their own beliefs/thoughts into what they think the film is suppose to be about.

Maybe there is no trailer because there is no benefit for this type of film. The film is essentially "done" when those who have seen it in its entirety provide us with the spoiler/truth. Either its a hoax or not. When the truth comes out the film will be just evidence of a hoax or visual evidence which will pale in comparison to the actual physical evidence of a real bigfoot.

Keep in mind the film maker has probably also had a lot of emotions about the entire situation.

    1. The people who provided the synopsis of the documentary have seen it. They have stated that. Nobody reviews a movie without watching it, that's what they do.

    2. This isn't a review. Its a description. Where's the review?

    3. I see you pick one word from what I said and then change the subject. Fine, it's a synopsis, an overview..a description. The fact remains that these people watched the documentary.
There is no dead Bigfoot, and that's my opinion.

    4. I see Anon 4.07 is trying that tired old argument. So the Hot Docs people allow their staff to make up the synopses of movies they are screening? The guy saw the title "Shooting Bigfoot" and thought it must be a rollicking foray in the style of Blair Witch? He guessed that the movie starts with “I don’t think an hour goes by in the day where I don’t think about Sasquatch”? Of course it has been seen! An admin at FBFB named David Durett posted an email he received from the Director of Programming at Hot Docs stating that both she and Justin Mah had seen the film in full. So you can put that feeble excuse to bed. There is no dead bigfoot.

    5. Sounds like cath is dropping by again. This has already been explained. They have seen the movie....and yet no mention of anything remotely close to a dead bigfoot. Thank you, come again.

    6. I doubt anyone connected to a film or festival would give away the ending regardless- no matter what type of film it is. If the director is not giving any hints after all this, I'm pretty sure he made the point clear to everyone involved.

  4. Well there's a big difference between a review and description. But I'm sincerely curious. How do you know they saw it? And how did you come to your conclusion?

I just don't see film buffs spoiling films. Its not a realistic expectation. I don't see any evidence of a dead bigfoot or not from their description.

    1. A Dyer supporter emailed Hot Docs and that person received a reply stating that they watched the documentary.
Justin Mah and Charlotte Cook both saw the film. There is a post with the email quoted. This email was also posted at FB/FB.
I hope that clears it up for you. I don't have any other information about the film right now. Perhaps more tid bits will be sprinkled around as we get closer to the screening date.

    2. I went to the post I have up and copied the email.

"Unsolicited message to me (David Durett) from the Director of Programming at Hot Docs, sent at 8:06 p.m., several hours after I had thanked Justin and ended our exchange. His blurb didn't include a reference to "the last three minutes" because they are not commenting on it. (for those who don't get it, the last three minutes MUST be significant if they are choosing to officially not comment)"

      Dear David,

Many thanks for getting in touch. Both Justin and I have seen the film in
full. We're not commenting on the last three minutes, we recommend that
you come and see the film.

      Best wishes,
      Charlotte
